Personal Project- Email with Green Panther – Cha Patra-Yanan

Hey Zeyu!

ISB has progressed a lot in the past recent years. There has been a lot of things that our club has done to make our school greener, but also a lot of big projects that our school and community has done.

In the past 5 years, our club has been responsible for the ban of plastic bottle sales in our cafeteria, we also ordered really nice water bottles and encouraged the use of water bottles. All around our school we also have recycling bins which sort trash, and all the students usually abide to the sorting. What we find most effective, is if you educate the student body first about why plastic bottles are bad for the environment and their health. As always, whenever you make an environmental change, there will be complaints. But we find that if you educate and make them aware of the changes first, the complaints can minimize. The school has also supported this change by improving the water fountains around school to provide really fresh, cold water. Our club has also banned plastic bags in grocery stores within our community with the use of a Carrotmob, which I’m sure you remember from the ICE conference.

Some of the changes our administration and school has employed is the encouragement of vegetarian and organic food. All of our cafeteria food is organic, but every monday the majority of the food choices are vegetarian and we always offer a lot of vegetarian dishes. The school also invested a lot of money in using all fluorescent energy saving lights, and energy saving air conditioners.
Also, our school recently finished a new building called the CCT building. They put in a lot of money and effort to make this one of the most eco friendly buildings in Thailand, and this building received the LEED award. This building does a lot of things such as stores rain water for energy, reflects sunlight and heat, and has a controlled conditioning system so it monitors the air conditioners for the entire building, making sure none of them use too much energy.
Another thing the school invested in, is switching to using eco-friendly paper. Paper that uses less trees to produce. We are also shifting more and more towards electronic homework to minimize paper waste. All the napkins and paper cups in the cafeteria are also bio degradable.

Finally ISB monitors it’s energy usage every year, and try to decrease by 5% each year but this year we are aiming for 20%, because the previous year it went up by 2%.

In the future ISB hopes to establish an organic garden on our campus, this idea was inspired from a guest speaker we had from the Bali Green School.

Hopefully this helps, and I hope NIST can make changes that will benefit the environment 🙂

Hello Cha,

For my Personal Project I am creating a presentation on how NIST can improve its environment, this would be presented to the NIST Admin Team.

From the ICE conference, I know you are one of the leaders for Green Panthers so I hope to gain some information about what ISB is doing to make their school a greener place.

What are some changes you have made to the school that makes ISB a greener place? Does ISB use energy efficient light bulbs and do you guys have solar panels or are there some other thing you ISB use to become more eco-friendly?

Personal Project- Email with Mr. Ajay

Hello Zeyu,

Your questions are very thoughtful. Here are my thoughts on your question.

Since there is greater focus on recycling, that best way to manage waste is to create visibility of the quantity and the nature of waste generated by source. The data could be collected and displayed on a daily and cumulative basis. This will enable you to come up with an actionable plan. Similarly, since carbon foot print is a result of our consumption, one of the best ways to start reducing your foot print is to understand what is contributing to the carbon foot print and by how much; then you can create a plan for reducing the the carbon foot print.

Hope this is helpful.

Hello Mr. Ajay,

For my Personal Project I am creating a presentation on ways of improving the environment of NIST. I have noticed how un eco-friendly NIST is when I came back from the EARCOS GIN Conference from Manila.

I have a few questions about how are some ways NIST can improve their environment:

Waste Management has always been a hard topic for me, I was at the meeting for the Roof Top Gardens and I learnt about the three R’s and how schools focuses only on the Recycle phase but not on the reducing phase. But since we are more focused on the recycling stage what are some effective ways to manage our waste?

Also you have a lot of experience working with a lot of different schools around the region, what are some change they have done to the school to make it much more environmental friendly?

Finally what is a good way to make a building have a low carbon footprint, is it buy using energy efficient light bulbs or using alternative energy sources?

Thanks for your time on answering these questions,

Hi Zeyu,

So sorry, Mr. Ajay came last Tuesday and it completely slipped my mind to put the two of you in touch. He’s out of Thailand now, but he’s great about answering emails and Skype calls, so perhaps you can get in touch with him that way.

I’ve CCed him onto this email so you may contact him directly.

Ajay, Zeyu is one of our year 11 students who is doing his Personal Project on creating an environmental recommendation for the school Board and would be very interested in speaking with you about your work.

Thank you,
Teresa

Personal Project- Ideas

Oval

Our school is a very energy consuming school, using lights and conditioning on a daily basis. When creating this energy, Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. As a green house gas it contributes to global warming. To cut down on our CO2 emissions trees needs to be planted. The Oval can be a solution to this issue. The Oval itself has created a lot of problems in the past. When it rains hard, the Oval becomes muddy and it quite a long time to dry. Also on normal days when people play on the Oval, the grass would die causing it just to be dirt and sand. So instead of growing grass, the Oval can be changed and trees can be planted on it. This can offer shade and picnic tables can be placed under these trees making it a perfect place to study and learn. Also parts of the oval can be turned into gardens, where the elementary children can grow things and learn the life cycle.

Secondary Building Roof

The roof of the Secondary Building is very boring and plain. There is no solar panels or any
type of life. This space can be transformed into a roof top garden. This again would help minimize our carbon footprint but it also can make our school and greener place. This can also serve as a study area for students. Solar panels can be added as an extra layer on top of the garden. This would give shade to the children studying there and also provide clean and free energy for the school to use.

Personal Project- After Meeting 4

Today I went to talk to Ms. Teresa and about what I should do for my PP right now. I am quite behind right now as I haven’t transferred all of my research onto my blog. This would set me back a bit as I need to get that all onto the blog as soon as I can. Next there is an environmentalism that is coming to NIST and going to talk about roof top gardens. He will also be presenting to the NIST Administration team. I have decided to interview him as a primary source and then using that information I will add to my presentation. The deadline for this is very soon and I have to start getting my presentation together. So here are some things to do:

  • Transfer all information onto the blog
  • Create presentation

Apart from that I think I am very much on track with my personal project.

Personal Project- Criteria A, Using the Process Journal

The process journal is somewhere where we talk about our progress. Right now I think I am at a level 3. This is because I haven’t been updating my blog monthly. This is because I have kept all my research and elsewhere and haven’t had time to update my blog. I have demonstrated communication skills with my supervisor as I have always emailed her or went to talk to her to set up my meetings with her. Also I would communicate with her to see if I am up to date with my blog posts, showing my organizational skills. On the other hand, I have demonstrated some information literary skills as all my research are not yet posted on my blog. Finally I need to reflect more on my work and make sure I am regularly updating my blog.

To improve my grade, I should add all my research into my blog, this would demonstrate my information literary skills. Also I should add all of the email communications I have with my adviser onto the blog to further demonstration my communication skills. This would hopefully make me get a better grade for my process journal.

Personal Project- 4th Meeting with Supervisor

Today I went to see Ms. Teresa and asked her when she is free to meet for my 4th personal project meeting. Since this week only has 4 days in it, both of us were very busy. This made us decide to meet next Thursday, September 6th. This is after the deadline that Ms. Angela set, but I think it is the only time that both of us are free, demonstrating time management skills.

Personal Project- Summer Research

The summer has started and according to my plan, in this two month it is when I shall do most of my research. There are still quite a few things for me to start researching on. I have already found some great sources but still need to extract the good information out of them. This would be the first part of my research, researching about ways the environment can be improved.

The second part of my research is to research ways to have better presentation skills. My final product would be a presentation that I will make to the Administration presenting my findings and ways that they could improve the environment of NIST.

Personal Project- Contacting the CCI

The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) is a program under the William J. Clinton Foundation which Former President Bill Clinton created. This programs helps to create solutions to tackle the roots of the climate change problem.

I have contacted them to ask them if it is possible for them to conduct a review of NIST. This would become every handy as they are a very reliable source and would provide good valuable information about how NIST can improve the environment.

Here is the link to their official website.
